An astrological chart is a blueprint indicating the potentials a newborn is endowed with to grow in consciousness. Just as the DNA holds the key to our physical development, so the subtle energies the universe gives to each one of us at birth is the key to our spiritual development. The way the solar system is patterned at a specific time of birth (as seen by the human eye from the vantage point of the Earth) illustrates the patterns of energy the newborn has to work with. Planets and stars are symbols, symbols of energetic tools a newborn has to use. They are letters of the alphabet of the astrological language rather than direct causes of human behavior. One’s character is the product of one’s choices; it is the wisdom in the soul that gives the energies represented in the birth chart the power to fulfill their promise in a positive, life-affirming way.
Sophia’s Chart: Taurus Rising, the North Node in Taurus in House One;
the South Node, the Moon and Neptune in Scorpio in House Seven
When Sophia first came into this world and took her first breath, the one out of the twelve constellations that was rising in front of her over the horizon was Taurus, the fixed earth sign. This became Sophia’s window on the world. The universe was telling Sophia that in this life, her soul came here to experience comfort and to settle down to a stable existence where she could savor all the fruits of life, knowing that all she constructed would remain solid and enduring for as long as possible. In turn, her soul hoped this would bring inner peacefulness.
Of course, human beings need more than material abundance to experience satisfaction and inner peace; they need spiritual food as well as a sense of connection to the universe .
Taurus is the sign of material stability and those who are looking through a Taurus window (Taurus rising), once they are settled into a stable and comfortable way of life, tend to resist any disruption in their normal routine. Thus, Sophia builds up momentum gradually and steadily and develops inveterate habit patterns ,that sometimes become difficult to change. A determined and persistent attitude toward life in general is a two edged sword. Sophia can be resolute or simply stubborn. She can be dependable--someone people can count on. She can be unyielding as well.
Still, all of the Taurean qualities of determination are to be encouraged, as in this lifetime Sophia is transforming the character traits inherited from lifetimes where Scorpio , not Taurus, was the prevailing energy in her consciousness.
The Scorpio south node in the house of relationship, along with the Moon/Neptune conjunction, tells us about the soul’s past. Sophia’s soul had in the past a tendency to burn all of its bridges behind it once becoming dissatisfied with the results that were created. It had relied too much on others and what they could provide and ended up disappointed. Disappointment with others is a soul memory that lingers on. The soul of Sophia is moving from a dependence upon the energies of others (Scorpio represents the phase of human experience where the soul incorporates the resources and values of others through deeply involved relationships). Instead, she is here to create her own values, attaining liberation from the passions of Scorpio and the entrapment that ensues when what one desires is not forthcoming.
Sophia’s Scorpio Moon runs to extremes. When life is going her way, she is on top of the world. When she is dissatisfied, she broods and harbors feelings of deep malcontent. Life can be thrilling, but it can also more easily come crashing down and sink into a deep, dark abyss. It is a roller coaster Moon to be sure.
Scorpio is filled with suspicions. It is willing to give one hundred per cent to make a relationship as much as it can possibly be, however, it has to feel that it can trust the other person completely in order to share the value implicit in the partnership. Thus, the Scorpio Moon individual may look for conspiracies as there is a feeling, lurking somewhere inside, that they could be betrayed in some way. If Sophia believes this and puts intensity into this belief, it will probably happen. Then she will learn that her ability to use her intensity to materialize what she longs for works both ways; it is a two-edged sword that can heal, or that can hurt.
If Sophia plays with powerful energies, it is best to know beforehand if she can manage them wisely. The Scorpio Moon tends to obsession and an individual obsessed emits an energy that attracts and repels at the same time.
Furthermore, if Sophia obsesses over something, she will never have it; it will have her. She will be caught in the grip of her obsession.
As a youth, Sophia would feel her privacy was at stake and that others were being invasive with her. It seemed that way, however, it could just as well have been the other way around. Sophia has a penetrating energy that is both seductive and mysterious (the Scorpio Moon, particularly with a female, is particularly magnetic). Sophia sees deeply into people and situations. When she perceives a quality(s) in someone she feels is desirable, her energy sends out a signal that is mesmerizing.
Primarily because little goes past her, Sophia is good at the art of self defense. She knows what is going on, although she may not know the motivation behind what she sees, as she has only her own motives to project into the situation. It might serve Sophia to be reminded that the Scorpio Moon has a vindictive predisposition. If it hits bottom and manifests the nature of the Scorpion, the animal that would sting itself to death rather than forego the pleasure of stinging, it loses its power to recreate circumstances by rising above them (the phoenix symbol). At the same time that Scorpio can go to the lowest depths, it can as well ascend to the greatest heights. In fact, it descends to the depths in order to rise to corresponding heights and in the process be transformed into a more potent expression of the divine light.
The highest expression of the Scorpio Moon placement is to love your enemies, and accept everything they bring into your life, as they are but reflections of the qualities you want to transform in yourself.
All that she has felt an aversion to, Sophia has called into her life to mirror back to her the emotional healing she is asking for, so that she can finally be free of internal agitation and from desires that go away from the path of evolution her higher self has chosen .
The Sun in the Tenth House and Mercury in House Eleven,
both in the sign of Aquarius
The Aquarian star sign is a seeker of truth and freedom, a person who bows to no one yet respects the humanity in everyone. This is Sophia’s ultimate destination-- to build a reputation for being humane and egalitarian while working actively within her community. Aquarians have to be different. They want to remain staunchly independent of any single influence yet, almost paradoxically, they defer to the collective mind-set and respect the current parameters of society. Still, they never give up on their intention to break through those parameters into an updated version of what has been. They care about the world and are curious about everyone in it. They want to inspire people with a new vision and disseminate ideas about making this world a better place.
At heart, Sophia is a humanitarian person who does especially well when energy is evenly distributed among several individuals in a group setting. It is when she must deal with individuals that she can run into clashes. A strong, independent person, Sophia is tolerant, however, what she does not tolerate is for anyone imposing anything upon her that is not of her choosing, or invading her privacy or acting superior.
Sophia thinks that it is the right thing to look at everyone as an equal. This does not mean that she feels equal to everyone. It is more likely that she feels both superior and inferior to others. Superior because she has a high frequency consciousness, processing information and connecting with the reality of a situation much more quickly and with greater facility. Inferior because, as friendly as she is, she feels different and removed from the place most people are at. Sophia has no time for trivia and egocentric monkey chatter. Her mind seeks out the big picture and desires to know the truth. That is not the priority of mass consciousness
Sophia does like people though. She has a sense of each person she meets after just a few minutes of conversation. As the penultimate sign, the Aquarian has absorbed the energy of all the preceding signs. Thus, in each interaction Sophia has with another human being, she experiences a part of herself. She wants to move into a space of trust and share freely with as many people as possible and yet she does not want to give exclusively to any one person. She has to maintain her own thoughts, which are a synthesis of the full spectrum of her experience and thus, Sophia cannot allow an over identification with any single line of thought. Instead, she cultivates a broad vision of life where she can feel the connectivity she shares with the entire human race. There are no fences around Sophia’s mind. She is a consistently positive thinker, always open to hearing new ideas. She likes to gather as many different opinions as possible in order to form a consensus. She defers to the will of the group rather than to any single opinion. She withholds making hasty judgments. She studies the issues at hand with a degree of detachment. Somewhere in her mind, there is a reference point for everything that she perceives so she rarely misgauges a situation. She is willing to wait and to watch as the truth of the matter wills itself out.
Mars in Libra in the Sixth House
Initially Sophia prefers to arrive at a state of peaceful coexistence with all the people she is in relationship with. She puts much effort into reconciling differences in order to attain the peace and harmony she craves. If the other person(s) does not want accord, Sophia can then turn into a powerful antagonist. Her vital forces and combative abilities are charged up by injustices perpetrated by others in her presence. This especially shows up in any place that could be considered a workplace (the sixth house). When Sophia has someone to debate with, someone to bounce her ideas off of, her energies go in two directions at once. On the one hand she is diplomatic and pacifying; on the other, she is stirring up controversy to make sure that the people she is in discussion with really know what they are talking about.
Dichotomous Libra swings two and fro like a pendulum and so do people whose Mars is in that sign. They can be as peaceful as a lamb or as angry as a hornet. Accordingly, Sophia keeps her eye on the other person’s actions and keeps score. She aims to make sure that no one is going to get the best of her.
Jupiter in Cancer in the Fourth House
There may be no better place to have Jupiter, the planet of both material growth as well as spiritual development, (the planet that opens up, expands and moves everything it contacts in a forward direction) than in Cancer-- the sign of its exaltation.
As one astrologer put it so beautifully, ‘the Jupiterean bread cast out upon Cancerian waters comes back as cake, frosted and with ice cream.”
On top of all that, to have it in the house of its accidental exaltation (because the fourth house is the sign Cancer’s natural home) is almost too good to be true. This along with the fact that the planetary energies in Sophia’s chart are so harmoniously aspected suggests that her soul has very good karma and she has a great deal of credit in her spiritual bankbook.
Jupiter in Cancer in the fourth house can give the individual fortunate enough to have this placement in their chart the faith and wonder of childhood innocence carried over into the adult years and this supports them in feeling connected to the universe and in trusting the natural flow of the life process. Their spiritual nature blossoms, as their consciousness evolves. Cancer is the nurturer and with the planet of growth and development placed here, the individual has the potential to nourish the hearts, bodies and minds of others. Many could be drawn into their open arms where they dispense loving care to countless numbers of individuals. In turn, they can be confident that no matter what, the world will takes care of them. Spiritual growth is a priority with this placement and it is an acquisition that the world can never take away.
Venus in Pisces in the Eleventh House
Here again, Sophia has another planet in the sign of its exaltation. In Pisces, Venus, the mythological goddess of love is in love with love and does not hesitate to give of herself completely. The magic and the beauty in life is what Sophia seeks, as if she were ready anytime to sail away to a technicolor desert island in the South Seas and enjoy her days soaking in the beauty in the arms of a soulfully romantic lover who has eyes only for her. Sophia is the epitome of the romantic soul. Still, Pisces is as much about illusion and fantasy as it is about love. While Sophia may dream of having a truly loving relationship, she is often hurt in matters of the heart and it is disappointment in love that opens up the compassionate heart that is the great potential of Venus in Pisces. For as the Beatles sang, “in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make.”
Saturn in Pisces in the Twelfth House -
If life has blessed Sophia with so much, why is it that she is still disappointed and unsatisfied. The answer is found in the placement of her two planets in Pisces--Venus whose love is conditional (I will love you if you love me back) and Saturn (the taskmaster who disciplines all under his rule; thus Saturn is the symbol of the law and karma.) When Saturn and Venus are in the same sign, the manifestation is tough love. Why does Sophia have this?
No unevolved soul would have Saturn in Pisces in the Twelfth House, the last sector of the chart. It is the sign of serve or suffer in the house where one’s hopes and dreams have reached the end of the line. In many ways, Sophia is like many souls who have been around the earth for so many lifetimes and are reaching a place where most of it does not mean as much as they thought it would. This placement is a crossroads for the soul who God has blessed with everything it could possibly want except the thing it wants the most.
Pisces is the most spiritual sign and when Saturn is placed here, while the soul may live in isolated splendor, it is lonely and longs for experiences that will take the loneliness away.
Sophia can do this by creating a greater version of herself and giving the world a loving, compassionate contribution that it would not have had otherwise. Once she lets go of fears that are unfounded and desires that cannot be satiated and instead opens up and allows the universe to work its magic through her, the placement of Saturn in Pisces bestows the gift of grace. Grace is one of the few things in life that is not for sale--no one can buy it; it must be bestowed by God. In getting out of the way and allowing the universe to come through, Sophia can step up to a higher and holier calling and become a part of a co-creative process that involves the entire world and she can see the extent to which her love can make all the difference.
